Our journey here – Jayne and Mark Lacey

In late 2011 we bought Tan y Gader with the view to establishing our dream of running a B&B in North Wales.

We had looked at many different towns but eventually settled on Dolgellau after spending many happy holidays there, we quickly had fallen in love with the slower pace of life, the wonderful vast expanses of scenery and the friendly community.

The building prior to us purchasing it been 3 apartments, and required a lot of updating and modernising to enable us to use as a luxury B&B. As the house is grade 2 listed we also had to comply with regulations and were also keen to be very sympathetic to the house.

After enlisting the skills of a brilliant local team of builder, joiner, plumber and electrician they got to work whilst we project managed whilst still living and maintaining our paid jobs back in West Yorkshire. We also had wait for our house there to sell in order to finance the works. For many months we travelled over every couple of weeks to check on the progress.

After the opportunity to take voluntary redundancy from my job from social housing arose, and as we had sold our barn in Yorkshire, we decided to move completely to Dolgellau and for Mark to continue with his post as a Chief executive in Huddersfield, staying with friends most of the working week and joining me later in the week when we spent all our time sanding, tiling, decorating and planning.

After many, many months of dust, mishaps, problems help from family friends tea and cake! & countless hours sourcing an eclectic range of furniture & artwork, we final opened in April 2014 with just 1 en-suite bedroom and guest dining room. Then with the 2nd bedroom and guest drawing room around September. As the house was formally the towns much loved maternity home till the mid seventies we held an open day that month to welcome anybody who wanted to have a look at what we had done to the building.

In May of 2015 we finally completed or 3rd bedroom & following on from this in July decided to name the rooms, as numbers seemed quire boringgiven the quirky nature of the B&B.

And so welcome to Alice, Secret Garden & Narnia.

We hope you love your stay at Tan y Gader, we are confident you wont have stayed at another B&B quite like it......Enjoy the journey......
